Was university the right choice?

Posted 18th April 2016

Did you know that almost two thirds of graduates say their degree is irrelevant to the job they do? And 40% say they wish they had taken an apprenticeship instead. This seems to suggest that university was a waste of time for 40% of those who went. But surely a degree doesn’t necessarily have to be relevant.

Attending university provides you with an entry into life that is to be envied.  You live alone for the first time, make your own decisions and acquire self-motivation and a sense of responsibility.

All these life skills you learn are ancillary to the degree for which you are studying and are abilities recognised and desired by potential employers.

We think the 40% who wish they’d taken an apprenticeship must have been badly advised in the first place.

If you had ambitions to be a plumber, why would you sign up for a 3 year media studies course?

Some people never get the chance to go to university and envy the thousands of students who study at The University of Huddersfield.

They would have relished the opportunity and believe the 3 years spent studying for a degree in an atmosphere of academia (with a good student union bar attached) provides a great start to anyone’s life!

And, as we know from personal experience, it also forges friendships for life.

We hope you have a great time as a student studying at The University of Huddersfield!
