Tips for moving into your student home
Posted 28th August 2024
Moving into a student house is an exciting experience (especially if you’re an Edge Student Living tenant! 😊)
Preparation is the key to ensure a seamless and enjoyable transition into your new home. To help keep the experience as stress-free as possible, we’ve compiled a checklist of things to consider before you move into your new home – and also for on the day itself…
Before you arrive:
- Ensure you’ve agreed a collection date and time for your keys with your student landlord/accommodation provider. It’s handy to have their contact details stored in your phone – just in case!
- Read through the inventory – this informs you of what’s already included in your student home – no point in wasting valuable packing space!
- Make sure you have a copy of your tenancy agreement for reference purposes. It’s worth having another read through to remind yourself of any restrictions that may be in place. For example, at Edge Student Living we don’t allow pets or smoking inside our homes (this is typical for all student accommodation).
- Know which bank account you will be using to pay your rent and ensure the funds are in place in time.
- If you’re bringing a car with you, make sure you find out how parking works outside your house. Will you require a permit? How many spaces are available? If you need permits, try and organise them before you move in to avoid receiving hefty fines at the beginning of the year. To apply for a permit in Huddersfield you will need to fill in an application form from Kirklees council and send proof of residency plus a valid certificate of motor insurance for your vehicle. A signed tenancy agreement will be accepted as proof of residence, so you can apply as soon as you receive this from your landlord.
Organise a visitor’s permit before you move in, so that parents or anyone helping you to move in don’t receive a parking ticket!
On the day:
- Be careful when you are moving your belongings in – don’t leave your car or house open and unattended. Minimise the risk for opportunist thieves top steal your belongings!
- Check off the fixtures and fittings against the inventory. If anything is missing or damaged, make a note of it – take photos and inform your landlord.
- Ensure there is an Electrical Safety Certificate and a Gas Safety Certificate available for your property – if not enquire with your landlord about this.
- Ensure you’ve informed relevant people of your change of address; this includes University, your bank and your car insurance provider.
