Student homes with character

Posted 4th March 2024

This image is split in half to show the before and after of the refurbishment. The top image shows a room with green paint coming off the walls and concrete floor. The bottom image shows a red brick wall with a fireplace, laminate flooring and a white painted wall on the left. There is a yellow sofa in the middle of the room and a white table to the right with two bowls on it. In the corner of the room is a tv stand with flower filled vases on it. On the white painted wall is a square window.

We own all of the beautiful homes you see on our website – but they haven’t always looked as great as this! The homes have all required refurbishment and a huge programme of modernisation – and this is something which we organise and undertake ourselves to ensure they’re brought up to the fantastic standards associated with Edge Student Living.

Here, we take you through some of the fascinating history behind some of our characterful beautiful student homes.

In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for photos of our renovations on social media. We’ll be sharing these over the next few weeks and it’s fascinating to see what the homes looked liked before!

14 Park Drive

We’ve owned this stunning Victorian property since 2015 and it was derelict when we bought it. It had been split into bedsits and needed a complete programme of work to bring it up to modern standards. The staircase at 14 Park Drive is a real wow feature and there’s also some original features on the exterior of the building.

Interesting fact:  We found a secret space in the attic which is now the bedroom to apartment 8

15 Park Drive

We’ve owned this one since 2010 and it was also derelict when we acquired it. It had been used as a bedsit but previously had been used as a small hotel. The entrance hall has some beautiful original features such as the staircase and coving.

Interesting fact: The snooker room was the best feature and is still there behind the new walls and ceiling we built

Spring Bank House

We’ve owned this property since 2017 and it is now completely unrecognisable from when we bought it. Spring Bank House had been a theatre school but it had been derelict for some time before we started work to bring it up to modern standards. There are still lots of characterful features to be found including the staircase, coving in the hallway, decorative external stone-work and the gateposts.

Interesting fact: Spring Bank House is Grade II listed, and the stone gateposts are specifically listed too.

Highroyd House:

Interesting fact: Highroyd House used to be a care home – the stairlift was still in when we bought it!

We’ve had this property since 2016 and it had initially been built as the Vicarage to the neighbouring church. In more recent times, a large extension had been put onto the rear to make the care home bigger (this is now ‘The Wing’).

The staircase is still the main feature in this property and it is now a gorgeous home to 14 students who each enjoy their own en-suite facility.
