Should I move out for University?

Posted 28th November 2022

There are pros and cons with both, but at Edge Student Living we sit firmly in the camp of taking that leap and moving out for uni!

Read on to see the many reasons why moving out is likely to be a decision you’d be thankful you’d made.

Make new friends

Moving away from your family may seem pretty scary at first, but there’s plenty of opportunities whilst at uni to meet lots of new people. Remember, everyone’s in the same boat but feeling nervous is completely understandable if all you’ve ever known is the comfort of your own home. As well as the students on your course, you may end up meeting (and maybe even living with) others on different courses and different stages of their uni journey. Before you know it, you’ll have gotten to know each other and you may even gain friends for life.

Learn life skills

Lets face it…living at home can be rather cushy most of the time. It’s not until you take the plunge and move out that you realise all the new skills you need to develop to function as a completely independent human being!

For example, the need to manage your own money and budget so that you have enough money to do all of the things that you love doing alongside your studies.

Learning how to cook is another skill that is likely going to be developed once you move out. Sure, you may opt to eat the same microwave meals every day! But moving out is a perfect opportunity to experiment with different foods and flavours and cooking alongside housemates or taking it in turns to cook can be a really enjoyable experience.

Being one step ahead in acquiring these lifelong life skills for adulting in the real world is only a positive one and one that you may find satisfying and really rather enjoyable!

Enjoy a social life that suits you

Living in student accommodation really does give you opportunity to live your best student life (and it doesn’t have to be all about the late nights and drinking either!) Living in a big town or city is a great opportunity to explore your new surroundings, discover local hotspots and embrace the local culture.

Huddersfield is very multicultural and there’s much to see and explore. On the doorstep, there’s access to so much greenery and countryside. Many of our student homes at Edge Student Living are close to (well – literally across the road from!) Greenhead Park which is well known as being a beautiful, tranquil outdoor space. Imagine waking up and accessing that every morning.

Be your own boss

Moving out to uni means that you can literally be your own boss (and it’s not as scary as it sounds!) Make the most of the new-found freedom offered by university life by seeing friends and socialising (alongside your studies of course!), getting a part-time job for a little extra cash or rolling out of bed 10 minutes before your lecture is due to start as you’re onlya stones throw away from uni. You decide!

We understand that living away for uni isn’t for everyone and it’s certainly more expensive than living at home! However, moving out for uni is an experience that you’ll likely wholeheartedly enjoy and not regret!
