Settling into your new student accommodation in Huddersfield

Posted 14th October 2024

Moving away from home and adapting to university life can be a daunting experience for many students. A combination of missing your family and home comforts alongside having extra responsibilities can be difficult and can take some adjusting to.

Hopefully most university students will be nicely settled into their new surroundings but for some, it will take a little longer. If you’re currently feeling overwhelmed with all the recent changes and struggling to settle into your new student accommodation in Huddersfield, here are a few things which may help;

Make your room feel more homely

Bringing belongings from home, such as bed linen and photos, can instantly make your space feel more homely. Adding some additional homely touches in the form of plants or fairy lights can create a comforting environment and will make it more likely that you’ll want to spend time in that space.

Missing family and friends is completely natural – just know that you can always contact home and a quick phone call or Facetime can help you feel connected.

Get involved

Huddersfield has a fantastic student community with plenty of events taking place throughout the year. Attending events and joining clubs are great ways of meeting new people and a brilliant opportunity to get more involved in university life. You’ll soon get to know more about your new town and university; chances are that you’ll meet others who’ve also felt daunted by adapting to university life.

Get to know Huddersfield town

Huddersfield is a quirky historic town with a diverse range of things to see and do. The centre itself is vibrant with plenty of shops and places to eat and drink.

There are lots of things to see and do around the area – and it doesn’t have to cost the earth to explore them; see our guide – 5 free things to do in Huddersfield.

Huddersfield isn’t just a traditional northern market town as perceived by many; outside the centre you’ll find a vast range of beautiful scenery with Pennine views and rolling hills – just perfect for exploring. If you’re an outdoorsy kinda person, you’ll be spoilt for choice with walking and cycling routes.

There are many charming villages just a short distance from the town centre – Honley, Lindley and Slaithwaite are some of our favorites and have some amazing places to eat and drink. Give us a shout and we’ll be happy to pass on some recommendations 😊

Prioritise yourself

Eat well. Sleep well. Look after your mental and physical health (sounds easy when we put it like that, doesn’t it?)

Keeping active goes hand in hand with this and, if you live in an Edge Student Living home, you’re never far from accessing amazing spaces such as Greenhead Park which can help keep up the step count as well as improving wellbeing.

If you’re struggling with your mental health at any point, the University of Huddersfield has wellbeing support and resources; this can be accessed here.

At Edge Student Living, we understand the importance of feeling settled in your student accommodation. We’re a family run team who really care about your experience – if there’s anything we can assist with just have a chat with us!
