Checklist of things to ask yourself before moving into your student home
Posted 25th August 2022
However, not only is it a daunting experience and a complete change from what you’re maybe used to, there’s SO much to think about before you’ve even got there.
Here, we’ve prepared a checklist of questions to ask yourself to leave you feeling more prepared and a little less daunted about the prospect of moving into your new student home… read on to find out more!
Before you move into your student home, ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I know the process for getting my keys from my student landlord/accommodation provider?
Make sure you have agreed a collection date and time. It’s also very handy to have their contact details stored in your phone – just in case!
- Have I read through the inventory?
This will help when it comes to packing as it informs you of what’s already included in your student home – no point in wasting valuable packing space!
- Have I read my tenancy agreement?
It’s worth having another read through to remind yourself of any restrictions that may be in place. For example, at Edge Student Living we don’t allow pets or smoking inside our homes; this is typical for all student accommodation.
- Do I have the contact details for all my housemates?
If not, endeavour to find out if you can! Not only will this break the ice before move-in day (especially if this will be the first time you meet them), but you can also decide who’s bringing what to minimise duplications in shared areas. Again, no point in having a few irons in one house!
- Do I really need to take my car to university?
One big plus of not taking one is that it could save you
Try to organise a visitor’s permit before you move in, so that parents don’t receive a parking ticket when they are helping you move in. If you do receive a ticket while your application for a permit is being processed, you can appeal.
- Have I thought about what to pack for university? (Yikes!)
Let’s face it, packing for university can be a little overwhelming to say the least! Do I really need to pack the kitchen sink? And what about the 100 pack of toilet rolls that my parents have bought to take with me? Questions, questions!!
To help you out with this, our next blog is a practical checklist to help you out with this – an essential list of things that you need to take with you to university. Watch out for next weeks blog – don’t miss it!!
