Checklist of items to take with you to your student home
Posted 29th August 2022
As promised, this blog is all about what you need to pack for university. Here at Edge Student Living, we’ve compiled a practical checklist to work alongside to hopefully make the task a little less daunting. You can thank us later 😊
- Important documents related to your stay at your student house
- i.e. your tenancy agreement.
- Important personal documents
- This includes things like your passport, driving licence and debit cards.
- Passport photos always come in handy too!
- Electronics
- Laptop and case, headphones, mobile phone, USB memory stick, power extension leads, hairdryer, device chargers, batteries.
- You could consider taking a printer (and ink!) though most universities have great printing facilities so you may wish to leave this bulky item at home.
- All Edge Student Living properties come with a TV in shared communal space so there’s no need to pack your own!
- Kitchen utensils
- Check in your detailed inventory what’s included at your student home as you don’t want to be doubling up; items such as kettles and toasters tend to be included!
- Otherwise you might want to work to the following list; recipe book, cutlery set, plate, bowl, mug, glass, general purpose knife, Tupperware set, scissors, bottle opener, chopping board, can opener, peeler, cheese grater, frying pan, saucepan with lid, wooden spoon, spatula, ladle, colander, measuring jug, whisk, baking tray, oven gloves, tea towel, washing up liquid and sponge, detergents, bin bags, cling-foil and tin foil. Other cupboard essentials can be bought once you’re there to save on packing space
- It’s worth speaking to your housemates about what you’re all intending to bring. Most people are normally happy to share cooking equipment and, for example, one pair of oven gloves or one cheese grater between you will normally suffice! Also, suggesting to your housemates to all bring a different recipe book along with you could be really helpful later on when you’re eating a wide variety of different meals!
- Bedroom items
- Basic furniture including a bed, bedside table, desk, chair, wardrobe, mirror curtains and a bin should be provided – just double check the inventory!
- You’ll need to pack a duvet and bed linen, including a pillow. A mattress protector is also advisable and coat hangers will come in useful too!
- Personal items, such as photos of family and friends, will help to make your space feel more homely.
- Bathroom products
- Items to pack include bath towels, hand towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser, electric shaver and shaving cream, hair products, hairbrush, make up and remover, hair dryer, hair straighteners, nail cutters, tweezers, small first-aid kit, medication and any personal supplies (e.g, contact lens, contraceptives), sanitary products, a couple of toilet rolls, toothpaste and a toothbrush.
- Personal belongings
- Items such as clothes, shoes and accessories.
- Don’t forget things such as a raincoat, trainers and gym/swimming kit! You might also want to pack a dressing gown and slippers.
- Our advice would be to choose your clothes sensibly and only take things that you know you’ll definitely wear. Bear in mind that it’ll be Autumn by the time you move into your new home, so pack accordingly – don’t forget your hat, gloves and scarf!
- Stationary and materials for university
- We’d stick with the very basics such as textbooks, pens, stapler, post it notes, notepads and a file and this will save on valuable packing space.
- If you find that you need additional items, you can always purchase them whilst you’re there.
- Other things you may want to consider taking:
- Items that could be easy to forget, but you may find valuable, include a rucksack, drinking water bottle, umbrella, flask, hot water bottle, pack of cards, small safe and some cash.
We think that Huddersfield is a really great place to live and study. At Edge Student Living, we’re excited to be welcoming those who are joining us in September and remember, if you’ve any questions just give us a shout 😊
