Here – we’ve compiled a list of 5 things that, in our opinion, are the top 5 things that you can do in Huddersfield without spending a penny. Read on to guarantee yourself some fun days out…
Greenhead park
Anyone who follows us knows that we’re a big fan of this place! A lot of our student homes are literally across the road from this lovely park and we know that a lot of our tenants already enjoy making the most of having this facility on their doorstep.
Greenhead park is in a fabulous location, being only half a mile from Huddersfield town centre and the University. The park is not far off being 140 years old and has always been a popular spot for local people; the events that the park hosts throughout the year attract people from miles around too.
It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a stroll around the wonderful environment and various different landscapes. If you wish, you can grab a drink and a bite to eat in one of the two cafes that are located here at the park. It also features many unique and interesting areas such as Italian gardens and a pavilion, and the park also boasts a skate park and tennis/multi-sports courts.
It’s the location of the extremely popular Huddersfield parkrun on a Saturday morning and is an enjoyable place to be all year round; we love observing the changing seasons here.
Castle Hill
This striking local landmark can be seen for miles around and, if you’re studying in the town of Huddersfield and haven’t seen it then – where have you been hiding?!!
The history of Castle Hill goes back over 4000 years. The site was developed as an iron-age hillfort and the remains of a well from a castle in the Middle Ages are still there. The well-recognised Victoria Tower that we see today was built more recently (saying that – it’s still over 130 years old!) and was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The grade-II listed monument was completed in 1899 which coincided with the 60th anniversary of Victoria’s reign.
The views from the summit are incredible, with 360 degree views of the beautiful countryside and views overlooking the town centre – how many local landmarks can you spot from Castle Hill? The Victoria Tower is open seasonally and, for a small fee, you can climb to the top to see even more extensive views.
There are many walks in the local vicinity of Castle Hill and it’s well worth the trip there for a lovely day out!
Tolson museum
Entry to the museum is free and is the place to find out more about Huddersfield from over the years. This Victorian mansion houses many interesting collections, including exhibits of local archaeology, natural history and weaving textiles and machinery.
The museum is located around 1.5 miles from the town centre; there is a frequent bus service which stops very near to the museum or choosing to get there on foot can make it a more full day-out! It’s set in the lovely grounds of Ravensknowle Park which features a playground, gift shop and refreshments.
Huddersfield Art Gallery
Whilst the main gallery undergoes significant building works to renew the roof on the Grade II listed building, the Huddersfield Art Gallery has temporarily moved to Unit 7 in the Piazza Shopping Centre.
The permeant collection within the gallery features artists such as L. S. Lowry and Henry Moore, as well as work by many other acclaimed artists. In the meantime, its temporary home continues to deliver a programme of vibrant exhibitions and feature established and emerging artists; it’s well worth paying a visit.
Beaumont Park
Woodland walks, stunning views, interesting features – this park has an abundance of reasons to visit! This local beauty spot is a couple of miles from the town centre and was opened just one year before Greenhead Park.
This Victorian park has network of paths that allow you to get off the beaten track and experience some peace and tranquility in and amongst nature.
It’s a terrific spot and makes for a very enjoyable day out!
